Until last week, I had never eaten a pomegranate before. I'd heard plenty about the health benefits of pomegranates, but I'd never actually ingested one. They were on sale at our grocery store, so I bought one. The Internets showed me how to prepare a pomegranate (this really works well), and voila! I am pomegranate-ignorant no more!
Some interesting things I learned about pomegranates:
~ they're a great source of vitamin C and potassium
~ they're rich in cancer-fighting antioxidants
~ you can usually find fresh pomegranates between September and January
~ they derive their name from the French "pomme granate," meaning "seeded apple"
~ an acre of pomegranate trees can yield up to 22,000 pounds of fruit
~ dried pomegranates are commonly used in floral decor
~ they're delicious!
This week I put together a fruit salad of strawberries, pineapple, banana, and pomegranate. Yum.
